Ending of Slumdog Millionaire

Today in Human Geo we finished the movie Slumdog millionaire. Jamal wins the million dollars, but after this we stopped the movie because school ended. We had the choice to stay and watch it, but I did not stay for very long. I only stayed for the part where he won a million dollars, but after this I had to leave. I really want to know how Jamal and Latika end together and if they end up happy.

Slumdog Millionaire

In human Geo we watched more of the movie Slumdog Millionaire. In the movie we left off when Jamal (the younger brother) invited Latika (that little orphan girl that the brothers met earlier) into their little place where they were sleeping. After this all three of them worked where it was all trash and a man asked them to come with him and they would be happy. The man took the children to a camp type place where there were many other kids that looked disabled. They were missing arms, legs, and were hurt in other ways. Jamal, Salim, and Latika did not know why the other children were hurting but the man that took them here told the to sing a song and in about a week they would have to sing to him. Salim was taken onto the side of the man that took the children and would listen to the singing, he was the boss. Salim witnessed a little boy singing and not doing very well, so the man  blinded the kid and Salim had to watch. When this was over the man told Salim to go get his brother Jamal. They made up a plan and ran away from the camp and the man, before they did this they took some of his money and ran with Latika. They all were running to catch a train but Latika was left behind. After this it was just the two brothers. They went around India scamming people to get money and food. They find Latika and run away to a hotel, but Salim is in charge now and tells Jamal to leave him and Latika. Jamal years later is a chiwalla and brings tea to people in the phone business. Jamal takes over for a friend for a moment and looks up his brother on the phone and calls him so he cam find him after all those years. We left off on this part but I am excited to watch it tomorrow to learn more about the movie and about the culture.

Cultural Geography

Today in class we watched a little bit of the movie Slumdog Millionaire. This movie was an example or people who have different cultures than us. Where they live was over populated, there was one scene where they showed the "houses" with tin roofs and were very close together and small. After they showed this they showed more, and more, and more. It was like never ending houses and you just understood how close everyone lived and how poor they were. Another thing that I noticed about their culture was there was trash everywhere, even in the river where the kids play and the mothers do their laundries. While the kids were playing in the river they acted like it was completely normal and that was great to do everyday. There were a lot of religious clashed where they attacked muslims and they people in this village for other reasons. There were also a lot of orphans and the kids would just roam the streets without getting into much trouble. Jamal did not know where his father is but him and his brother saw their mother get killed right in front of them. The orphan kids trade a lot of their things for money around the village. Jamal's brother sold Jamal's autographed picture to someone because he could get a good offer for it. After the two brothers got into trouble the mother took them to school. Their classrooms were full of kids just squished into corners of the room. The teacher even hit the kid for not doing something right. This is different than ours because they are so close and Im not sure if they actually learning anything. There were a lot of cultural differences between our life and theirs in the movie. I am excited to watch the rest and learn more about their culture.

Homework Period

Today Mr.Schick was not in school so he put an assignment up on his blog. I already did the Spotify anthem assignment so I worked on other homework like Earth Science, and Bible. I checked my grades as well and was not happy with my Human Geo grade because I only got a 5/10 on my Spotify anthem project and I do not know why. This assignment has brought my grade down a lot and I hope I can bring it up soon.

Push/ Pull songs on Spotify

Our second assignment was to find songs that give us a feeling of push or pull migration. The songs I chose where:
  • Stay by Florida Georgia Line
  • Riptide by Vance Joy
  • Beach Side by Kings of Leon
  • Here comes the Sun by the Beatles
  • Across the Universe by the Beatles
All these songs give me a feeling of moving and to me talks about moving and or staying in one place, but it might not for other people. Im sure there are many more songs but these songs come to mind and make me thing of migration in a way.

Culture

Today in class we learned about culture geography and how everyone has different traditions and cultural ethics. First we looked at a map of the country and how many people call carbonated drinks either soda, pop,  coke, or other. A lot of people called soda either soda or pop. Near Maryland a lot of people called it soda. Mr. Schick also talked about how he moved and our traditions here are strange to him. The traditions he said were different were eating crabs. He said it was "Weird" and unusual. Another tradition we have it liking the Baltimore Ravens as our football team. I am excited to learn about culture and traditions in this unit.

Countries Test

Today we took the test about the 13 countries and their government. I think that I did not do good on this test. I studied but I guess I did not study the right thing or study long enough because I felt like I did not know any of the answers and the essay question was easy but hard in a way. I knew the essay question but did not have much to say on the topic. Out of the whole test I feel like I only really knew about 5 or 6 answers from memory. The other questions I had to figure out and or guess. I hope that I did better than I hoped on this test.

Test Tomorrow

Today in class Mr.Schick was not here. Our class was told to go on his blog and use a study guide he made to study in class today. I studied with Kacey and Meredith. I feel okay about this test tomorrow, but I feel like it came out of no where since we have not finished all of our presentations in our class. I am nervous for the test because on the powerpoint it has examples and not the notes and if you click on the powerpoint from other people it will not let you see the persons project until they give you permission. Because of this I feel like I'm not prepared and will have to do research on the countries that I cannot see. I hope that I do well on this test tomorrow and I will study more tonight so hopefully that will help.

On my face I saw very few purple spots which meant skin damage. The lady gave me sun screen and told me to put it on whenever I am outside. After this I visited the mouth cancer table where lungs of people who don't smoke and lungs of people who smoked a pack a day for 20 years. The lungs of the person who smoked 20 packs a day was black and broken but the person who did not smoke at alls lung's were pinkish red and was full.
