Population Pyramids
Today in class we watched a video about population and the population pyramid of different countries in the world. We had a discussion after the video and looked at what population pyramids meant. Mr. Schick talked about he was born in the baby boom and where his generation was on the United States population pyramid. Most of the pyramids were thin at the top, thick and the middle, and a little bit thinner at the bottom. The last thing we talked about is the three different eras which are pre- industrialization, industrialization, and post- industrialization.

Growing Each Second
Mr. Schick was not here today so our class had to watch a video. The video was about the population in some places and how it was predicted to grow or fall in the next few years. There was a link after the video where we could click. The page that it took me too showed the death's and birth's today and they were increasing every second. It is pretty weird to think that that many people are dyeing and being born just today. When I am writing this the number of birth's this morning is 132,730 just today. The number of death's today is already 54,808 but is increasing at a slower rate then birth's. Even though it is true it is kind of hard to believe how many people are dyeing and being born today and they our population changes every second.

CIA
The CIA world fact book is a very interesting site to just explore when you are bored or you want to know more about a country in specific. In class today Mr. Schick let people that looked up facts the night before show us what they found on the screen. We saw some countries like Antarctica and the USA. While we were discussing the counties I liked to look them up on google and see what they looked like. A lot of the countries were really pretty and looked like a nice place to visit, but on the other hand there were some that didn't look like a very nice place to live. These countries were like Uganda and Chad. Mr. Schick also showed us an old commercial that he used to watch when he was a kid where the kids had to duck under their desks if the nuclear bomb bell went off. Some of the examples in the commercial were kind of funny because the kids threw them selves off of their bikes and clung onto the wall, but i don't think it was very funny to them back then.

The First Test and Voting Technology
Today in class we got our first unit tests back. I was a little disappointed in my grade because i only got a 75%. I studied pretty hard for that test too, every test so far this year i have studied for and i have gotten a bad grade but on the other hand my sister never studies and gets way better grades then me. I got 3 questions wrong and did horrible on the response questions.Mr. Schick also stated his opinion that if we made voting more then one day people would still not vote but i disagree. I think that if voting was over a weekend for friday- monday that more people will vote. Every year voting is a Tuesday and people may have work or have plans but if it is over the weekend then the people have to have one free moment to go. Even if you could vote from your smartphone or a card it would make it more easier for voters because technology is increasing so people may not want to go into some school and stand in a long line to vote. If it was mobile people could be standing in line to get their coffee or waiting to get their food at a restaurant and say "Oh hey ill vote right now!"

Life Expectancy
In class today we talked about life expectancy, what a crude birth rate is, and net migration. There are over 7 billion people on the planet and is increasing by over 73 million per year. Life expectancy is defined as average number of years to be lived in a group of people born in the same year. The crude birth rate os the number of births per 1,000 people of the population, it is produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate and this gives us the annual natural growth rate in percentage. The net migration rate is the difference between the number of persons entering or leaving a country during a year. An excess of persons entering the country is net immigrants and persons leaving the country is net emigrants, Immigrants are always positive and emigrants are always negative number. After we discussed this we took a look at a web site called https://www.cia.gov/index.html, it lists countries and facts about each place like the life expectancy, the obesity rate, and includes photos of the country. I really like this website because it is interesting to see all the different kinds of places and what they look like and what they are like.

The Human Geo. Test
Todays test was somewhat easy, I felt like i knew most answers. The only question I got stuck on was "what year was A Message To Garcia written." It took me a minute but I had to move on and pick the one I thought was the best answer. Other then that question I felt prepared, It did not take me that long to finish. Even though you are supposed to take your time I still had 20 minutes left, took my time, and went over my work. I feel like I will get an A on this test and that this test will help my grade this quarter and not make it worse.

Studying
Today in class Mr. Schick was not here because he had a meeting to go to. We had a substitute and could work in small groups to make flash cards to study for the test. I worked with Kacey and Meredith. We quizzed each other and mostly got most of the answers right. We made questions like "Who Wrote A Message To Garcia?"and "Who wrote the Message To Garcia." We also practiced for the essay questions that could be on the test " What are examples of globalization, and what are positive and negative outcomes." I am going to study them a few more times to make sure that I have the answers down and hope for the best for tomorrow.

Our Quiz On Wednesday
Today in class we reviewed for the test and went over what materials would be on the test. We were able to hear some questions that would be on the test and ask questions. There will questions like what is globalization and americanization, How did english become the international language of business, and more questions about what we have recently learned. I feel as if I am prepared for this test and will receive a good grade. I hope that i do get a good grade on this test and am prepared enough.

Globalization
Globalization is the connection of different parts of the world and results in the expansion of international, economic, political, and cultural activities, Globalization is often associated with "Americanization." Japan used to be the country with the highest life expectancy, this was before they had taco bells, KFCs , and McDonalds on every corner. Now their life expectancy has gone down due to the increase in fast food restaurants. When money is spent on these fast food chains the money is sent back to America so the "collectors" can make even more money. We learned in class on Friday about Japan and what it is like there because of globalization; the air quality is bad, there are many heavy cigarette smokers and, as i already said many fast foo chains. Another example of civilization is a process that is old civilization. "The Silk Road" was a collection of trade routes connecting the markets of Asia with Arabia, Mediterranean, and, Eastern Africa. These are set as trade routes so that time ago people could trade silk or tea with the Chinese in return for something they do not have or need. The Silk Road was established as early as the first century BCE.Wednesday, September 10, 2014
Did You Know
During class today we had a discussion on how "1 out of 8 couples married in the past year have met online."This means that todays world is more technology based, and in a few more years we could have more ways to meet new people. Another thing we talked about how Chinas official second language will be English. The Chinese picked up on English while ago and the most commonly understood word is okay. Most things nowadays are made in Thailand or China because it is cheaper to have them make and ship our items then for Americans to make them. The last thing we discussed was that minimum wage would be raised from about $7.25 per hour to about $10.10 an hour. I think that raising the minimum wage would help people make a better living and will help our Economy.

Our Fast Moving World
After watching the video today in class I had a few thoughts on some facts we saw today. The first fact was "1 in 4 workers has been with their current employers for less then a year." My reaction to this fact was that I was surprised because my grandfather talks about working at the same place for the past 50 years and he is still working. My dad is also saying he has been at his job for 20 years and the fact that most people don't work today, get fired, or quit says how much has changed in the work ethic through out the years. This effects me in my life because if it is only about one year today what will it be when I am older and ready for permanent job.The second fact that I found shocking was "If Facebook were a country it would be the third largest country behind china and India." This surprised me because I knew that Facebook was a big community but I did not expect it to be bigger then the United States, which has roughly 15.68 trillion people. That is a lot of people and just thinking that Facebook has more people on it is weird. The third fact that was surprising to me was that "the first text message was sent in December 1992." I thought that this event was a few years later in time. This effects me because if shows how much has happened in just a little over 20 years. This keeps me wondering what will happen in the next 10 or 20 years that will be a big change in the technology world.

The Rights To Vote
The Story "A message To Garcia" teaches us how to be a reliable person and get our work done without complaining in order to be successful. The author of the story, Elbert Hubbard, printed over 80 million copies of the story to people that wanted to hear their story and learn from it. Elbert died awhile later on a sinking ship called RMS Lusitiana in 1915. During class we learned about voting and how when my parents were young the voting age was change from what it is today. Then the age was 21 but today it is 18, when you were 18 you could be drafted into the war. I think the voting age being younger is a good thing. Though only 53% of eligible voters do vote and most of the voters are elderly people it was not the elders future that was worried for, it was the younger voters. Who ever the president was we have to deal with it, since they wouldn't be voting they didn't have a say. The senior citizens might not live for as long as the younger citizens. So why don't younger people vote? they might be to lazy or say they are to busy but are just at home watching television or playing on their phones. Mr. Schick mentioned they would much rather have an app or be able to vote on the computer, and I think that would be cool, but when I go with my mom voting is just walking i, casting a vote and walking out, there isn't much time or effort too it. Younger people should be voting because it is the future in front of them they should be worried about.

The Ice Bucket Challenge
Today class was mostly just a recap. First we took time to fix grades and understand powerschool and how to write new posts on our blog, most people were doing it wrong. The next part of class we learned how to add links to our blogs ,We added the link called "A message to Garcia."More towards the beginning we were visiting Mr. Schick's blog when we noticed he posted the ASL ice bucket challenge and he was doing it. We watched it and below the video said that we could do it tonight for homework. I have done the ASL couple weeks ago with my sister, though we did not donate money it felt sort of supporting and the ice water was very very cold. Since it could be for homework tonight me and Gabby have decided that we might do the challenge tonight after practice.
